Ministries & Volunteers

Please note that all staff and volunteers in parish ministries must take part in our annual safeguarding training, and agree to the Church’s safeguarding code of conduct.

Lectors & Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Lectors proclaim the Word of God, and Extraordinary Ministers of Communion assist the priest in distributing the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass. Formation for these ministries is required, and is offered periodically in the parish. Please contact the parish office (49721025) if you are interested.

Altar Serving

Altar servers assist the priest in the celebration of Mass. Any boy or girl who has received first Holy Communion can undertake this essential ministry in our parish. Training will be provided. If you are interested in becoming an altar server, please contact one of our co-ordinators: Star of the Sea:

Mike Ngan Woo St Patrick’s,

Calliope: Tim Connolly St Peter Chanel,

Tannum: Meredith Grove

Data Projector Operators, Commentators, Welcomers

These volunteers assist in the smooth running of our Sunday Masses and help provide a welcoming environment for all who come, especially visitors. Please contact the parish office (49721025) if you are interested.

Church Cleaners

We take pride in our beautiful Churches and a small number of dedicated volunteers give generously of their time to keep them clean. If you can help with this valuable work, please contact the parish office (49721025).

Liturgy of the Word for Children

This ministry explains the Sunday readings to children, and are conducted during 9am mass at the Star of the Sea Church and 8am at St Peter Chanel Tannum Sands during the school term.

Music

If you would like to join one of our choir or can volunteer your services to play the organ or another musical instrument for mass or weddings or funerals please contact the Parish Office.

Healing Prayer Ministry

Prayer for healing is the right, and perhaps even the duty, of all baptised believers. Christians throughout the world regularly pray for healing for themselves or others on a daily basis.

Our parish healing prayer ministry is a particular work of mercy in which trained members of the church come together with someone in need to listen, love and pray for them. The prayer offered in this setting may simply be by laying on of hands with a prayer of entreaty, and then prayer guided by the Holy Spirit.

Prayer with our parish ministers is always confidential and the dignity and privacy of each person is respected at all times.

If you feel the need for some special prayer of healing for something in your life, please contact the Parish Office 49721025 for further information. Brochures are available at the church doors and Parish Office.

Parish Groups

Youth Group

The Parish of Gladstone Youth Group runs during school term time. We meet fortnightly on Sunday afternoons (4:00-5:30pm) at the parish hall (Herbert St, Gladstone).

Our Youth group is a safe, enjoyable, and life-giving environment for any high school aged young people from Years 7 to 12.

It's an opportunity to connect with other likeminded young people and be part of social and faith-formation activities including retreats and the Annual Ignite Summer camp.

Become part of something bigger. Led by trained youth leaders. For more information, contact Bernadette 0417513515 or the Parish Office 07 49721025

Marist Laity

From 1901 until 2019, our parish was ministered by priests of the Society of Mary (the Marists). When the Marist order was originally established it was envisaged as a tree with various branches: the Fathers, Sisters, Brothers, Missionary Sisters, and the laity.

The Lay Marist group was reformed in 2015 by Fr Aliki Langi, as a group of lay faithful who wished to continue the charism of the Marists in Gladstone.

Our vision is "To think as Mary, Feel and act as Mary in all things”.

Our Mission statement is "To become Marist is to translate into our lives Mary's way of being faithful to the Lord from Nazareth to Pentecost”.

We are involved in outreach to the lonely. We assisted in various large parish gatherings. We undertook outreach visits to country churches. We are involved in various prayer activities including The Stations of the Cross. We contribute to various Missions and also our local SVDP society.

We have had annual retreats and some have attended conferences in Sydney to connect with the wider Australian community. So, in the Marist tradition we try to "go where something has to be done". And to go about our works and deeds in a quiet way.

We meet every 3rd Saturday of the month at 10am in the parish centre. If you would like more information you can contact Judy Munt (49722005) or Pam Rigby (pamelarigby@yahoo.com.au).
